The Congregation of Holy Cross is a religious congregation of priests and brothers that was founded in France in 1837. Holy Cross missionaries came to the United States in 1841 and a year later founded the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Today, Holy Cross is a growing religious community with more than 1,700 priests and bothers serving in sixteen countries throughout the world. Our rule of life calls us to be "men with Hope to Bring." Our symbol is a cross and anchors with the motto, "the Cross, Our Only Hope." here in the Eastern United States, you may know us from our two educational institutions: King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA; Stonehill college in Easton, MA.
A commitment to mission has been a part of Holy Cross' charism from its inception. Our United States Province of priest and brothers, for example, has been sending missionaries abroad for more than 100 years to countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mexico, Chile, Peru and Bangladesh. An estimated 350,000 people in these countries are helped by Holy Cross every day. However, as you will hear from Fr. Tony Szakaly, C.S.C., our international missions are growing rapidly and are in great need. With your help, we can do more to feed the souls and bodies of those suffering in unimaginable poverty.
